GER Number 8

Present Location: On loan to Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway

Designed: GER
Built:1877
Type: Family Saloon
Number: 8

Notes:
1881 converted for exclusive use of Edward, Prince of Wales and taking GNR roof profile. Total cost of convertion was £350. Went in to family saloon use unaltered from Royal condition in 1897 when new bogie carriage built by GER for the Prince.
No. 8 was one of four family saloons and they were, for the period, better than anything seen before. They were the first GER six wheelers apart from Prince Edward's first saloon built 1863. (He complained that it 'was not as steady as he would wish') so hence the conversion of No. 8.
